"I need a root canal"
A tooth endodontic treatment is commonly known as a tooth root canal treatment.
With a root canal treatment, the dentist aims to save a tooth by cleaning the tooth including the crown of the tooth and the nerve canals in the roots of the tooth. This is done by cleansing with irrigants and by shaping the canals until they become as free of bacteria as possible.
The root canal treatment is usually needed because the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth have been invaded by bacteria.
These microbes have caused infection and inflammation within the tooth. This process causes the tooth to die and become what your dentist might call: necrotic.
Another cause could be certain inflammation processes and trauma to the tooth.
How do we proceed with root canal treatments at Vere Dental, Battersea?
At Vere Dental in Battersea, we understand that the thought of a root canal can feel daunting. But with our gentle approach, advanced technology, and focus on your comfort, we make the process as smooth and pain-free as possible. Below, you can find what you can expect when you choose us for your root canal treatment in Battersea.
Step 1: Thorough Assessment
Your journey begins with a comprehensive dental examination. We’ll assess your tooth, discuss your symptoms, and determine if a root canal is the best solution—or if another treatment might be more appropriate. Using digital X-rays, we get a clear view of the tooth’s condition, ensuring we tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
Step 2: Your Comfort Comes First
Once we confirm the need for a root canal, we prioritise your comfort. You can relax with your favourite show or movie on our ceiling-mounted TV while we gently numb the area with local anaesthetic. We also use a dental dam, a protective shield that keeps the treatment area clean and dry, ensuring the highest standards.
Step 3: Cleaning and Healing
We carefully open, drain, and clean the inside of your tooth, removing any infected tissue. For teeth with severe infection, we may place a medication inside the tooth for about a week (or longer, if needed) to ensure the infection clears completely before we finish the treatment.
Once the tooth is as clean as possible, we seal the root canals with a biocompatible material and a mineral-based sealer. This not only protects the tooth but also supports the health of the surrounding bone.
Step 4: Restoring Your Tooth
After the root canal, we place a white filling to restore the tooth. We then allow the tooth to heal for about three months. If it remains symptom-free, we’ll prepare it for a porcelain crown.
This step, known as cuspal coverage, is crucial—it protects your tooth from fracturing, which is more likely to happen within 2 to 5 years without a crown.
Your Care, Our Priority
While we don’t currently have a specialist endodontist in-house at Vere Dental, our experienced team confidently handles the majority of root canal treatments. For more complex cases, we’ve built strong relationships with trusted specialists in the area. If a referral is needed, we’ll ensure you’re connected with a professional who matches your needs and provides the same high standard of care we’re known for.
