What to expect during your hygiene treatments?

What does the dental hygienist do?

New patient hygiene treatments

Registered patient hygiene treatments

Our hygienist will assess your general health, brushing habits, diet, and gum health.

This will take a little longer in case we have no information previously registered by one of our hygienists onto our system (for example if you are a new patient).

The next step is the use of the Air polisher which aids in removing tough stains. Detailed information on the Air Polisher can be find on our blog, by clicking here.

Then calculus or tartar is being removed with both the ultra sonic scaler as with the handscaler.

Then the hygienist will proceed to apply a polishing paste to finish off the treatment and give your teeth nice and shiny enamel.

Lastly, our hygienist will walk you through your daily habits and how to improve your gum health. They will discuss your further needs.

Periodontal health - What does this mean?

Your periodontium is comprised of the tissues holding your teeth stuck in your mouth by surrounding and supporting your teeth.

Your jaw bone and gums are part of the periodontium.

"Plaque accumulation on your teeth is the equivalent to an “all you can eat” buffet in a 5-star hotel, for bacteria"

"Gingivitis, also known as gum disease, is considered a low-level chronic inflammation caused by bacteria. It is the first stage within the group of periodontal diseases."

Good oral hygiene & good day-to-day habits will help avoid periodontal infections and reduce their consequences. For example:

  • Tooth sensitivity when brushing the teeth, drinking a cold drink, eating an ice cream
  • Receding gums
  • Tooth loss
  • It will help reduce gingivitis and periodontis which are considered low level chronic infections. A good example of a similar inflammation is bad cholesterol. These types of inflammations are not ideal for your general help and can be easily avoided.

"Periodontitis is the next step up within the group of periodontal diseases. It can result in debilitating consequences "

What is Periodontal Disease?

Your periodontium is comprised of the tissues holding your teeth stuck in your mouth by surrounding and supporting your teeth.

Your jaw bone and gums are part of the periodontium

Some Statistics from a study by the UK ADHS (adult dental health survey) in 2009:

  • 83% of adults show signs of periodontitis
  • Around 50% have some level of periodontitis
  • 60% over 65 have some level of periodontitis

Worldwide:
Severe periodorntitis affects 10 to 15 % of the population worldwide

Periodental disease is considered a chronic inflammation process.

During periodontal disease a biofilm of bacteria forms both above the gums as below the gums.

Periodontal disease is considered a progressive gum inflammation if it is not addressed accordingly.

What is Periodontal Disease?

1. Gingivitis, also known as gum disease, is considered a low-level chronic inflammation caused by bacteria.

It is the first stage within the group of periodontal diseases.

2. Periodontitis is the next step up within the group of periodontal diseases.

It can result in debilitating consequences, like tooth loss, ineffective digestion, pain, abscesses etc.

Link between your gum health and your general health

  • Your full immune system is being activated due to the inflammation in your gums.
  • Bacteria produce toxins that can spread through the body.
  • This leads to chronic inflammation.

Association with diseases:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
  • Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes
  • Chronic Renal Disease
  • Cognitive decline/dementia
  • Cancer
